Abstract

1444093 Laminating press IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 27 Dec 1973 [22 Jan 1973] 3176/73 Headings B5N and B5F [Also in Division F2] An apparatus suitable for use in a method of making a pressed article by pressing a workpiece comprises (a) a press having at least two press platens 3, (b) a pair of press-plates 2 interposed between the press platens for receiving the workpiece 1 therebetween and (c) a pressure distributing device disposed between the press plates and one of the platens, the pressure distributing device comprising a supporting plate and a plurality of disc spring units disposed adjacent to one another over the surface of the supporting plate, each disc spring unit being located on the supporting plate by a rivet extending through the central orifice of the unit. A disc spring unit is defined as being either a single disc or a plurality of disc springs stacked one upon the other, a disc spring being defined as being a frusto-conical disc of metal, e.g. spring steel or phosphor bronze, having a central orifice, which disc may or may not have a circular perimeter, and which is able to elastically absorb deformations caused by an outside load. The disc spring units are preferably positioned on the supporting plate with the wider parts of their conical discs resting on the plate; alternatively, the units may be positioned with the narrower parts of their conical discs resting on the plate. The discs of a unit may be stacked all facing in the same direction; alternatively, they may be stacked facing in alternate directions. By using single disc springs or composite disc springs of differing characteristics, it is possible to provide preselected parts of the device, which in use, transmit differential pressures in a controlled and preselected manner. In the embodiment shown, wherein 12 polyvinyl chloride foils are laminated under heat and pressure, two pressure distributing devices are used, each device consisting of the spring units 4 sandwiched between steel sheets 5, the platens being drilled for the circulation of steam and cooling water.
