Abstract

1444048 Copolymers of N-vinyl carbazole XEROX CORP 15 March 1974 [19 March 1973] 11569/74 Heading C3P A random copolymer is derived from components comprising at least first and second components respectively corresponding to (i) N-vinyl carbazole and (ii) at least one monomer selected from N-vinyl phthalimide, N-vinylamine and an electron acceptor other than N- vinyl phthalimide or N-vinylamine. The N- vinyl carbazole/N-vinyl phthalimide copolymer may be prepared in solution in benzene using a catalyst such as azobisisobutyronitrile. The resulting copolymer may be treated with hydrazine hydrate to yeild an N-vinyl carbazole/ vinylamine copolymer which is subsequently reacted with (a) a tetrahalophthalic anhydride to form N - vinylcarbazole/tetrabromotetrachloro- or tetraiodo-phthalimide copolymer, (b) 2,4 - dinitrofluorobenzene to form N- vinylcarbazole/N - vinyl - 2,4 - dinitroaniline copolymer or (c) 1-fluoro-4-nitrobenzene to form N - vinylcarbazole/N - vinyl - 4 - nitroaniline copolymer. Solutions of the copolymers may be applied to a conductive substrate, e.g. aluminized polyester film substrate, optionally coated with a barrier layer to form the photoconductive layer of an electrophotographic imaging member.
