Abstract

144,375. Challenge Cycle & Motor Co., and Ramsey, W. March 8, 1919. Spring devices.-Relates to spring frames for mutorcycles, side-cars, &c., of the type in which the roadwheel spindle is carried by links or arms pivoted in the extremities of the frame, and having dependent lugs for connexion with springs arranged below and secured to the bottom stays or members of the frame. The invention consists in a construction of the spring device whereby the springs are arranged in a particular manner and are provided with a casing which is secured to the adjacent hub or arm on the cycle &c. frame by means of a rod passing through a cap screwed on to the end of the casing. The rearwheel axle of a motor-cycle is carried in slots 25 formed in links 7 which have bearings 4 of comparatively large diameter in the frame, the links being formed with arms 14 which are connected to the frame through tension and compression springs 16, 24, 21. The two rear stays 2, 3 are connected to a circular plate 4, Fig. 3, with an internal flange 5, fitting into a corresponding flanged circular member 8, Fig. 2, forming the hub of a bell-crank lever, of which one arm 7 carries the rear-wheel spindle, the other arm 14 being connected to the spring cushioning-device. The outer flange 9 of the member 8 bears on the flange 5 of the plate 4, whilst ball bearings 12 are interposed between an inner flange 10 and the central bolt 11. Tension and compression springs 16, 24 are arranged within a casing 17, which is closed at the rear end by a perforated screw cap 20 through which passes a rod 15<a> screwing into a continuation rod 15 which is secured to the lug 14. The front end of the tension spring 16 is secured to a short rod 18 passing through a bracket 19 fixed to the lower stay 3. The tension of this spring is adjusted by means of nuts on the screw-threaded end of the rod 18. A slight angular movement is allowed for by flaring the opening in the bracket 19 through which the rod passes. The inside compression spring 24, which abuts against a plunger 23 at the end of the rod 15<a>, acts in conjunction with an outside compression spring 21 to cushion the movement of the tension spring 16. To ensure lateral rigidity the wheel may be further supported by an horizontal stirrup or yoke 26, pivoted at 28 to the saddle tube, and connected at the rear end either to the wheel spindle direct, or to the link 7 throgh shackles 27. The arrangement is shown in Fig. 5 as applied to a side-car, the brackets 19 for the spring member being fixed on the longitudinal members 32 of the chassis.
