1443711 Pipe couplings K MCDONALD 5 Sept 1974 [6 June 1973] 27037/73 Heading F2G A pipe coupling assembly comprises a socket of plastics material for receiving a spigot; a locking ring 4 of plastics material engaged with socket end 3 and defining therewith an annular recess having a mouth on the inner surface of the coupling and a resilient annular sealing ring 7 having a body portion 13 by which it is retained in the recess and a neck portion 14 with a lip 15 extending from the mouth of the recess, the lip being compressed between internal surface 17 of the socket and the external surface 16 of a spigot inserted into the socket. Locking ring 4 is snap fitted on socket end 3 being secured by annular rib 10 on the inner surface of skit 5 engaging in annular groove 11 on the exterior of the socket, the free end of annular extension 9 of socket end 3 abutting flange 6 of ring 4. The mouth of the recess is defined by flange 6 and an inner shorter annular extension 8 on the socket. In another similar embodiment extension 9 is dispensed with so that the outer boundary of the recess is defined by skirt 5 of locking ring 4. In yet another embodiment extension 8 is also dispensed with and the free end of the socket is formed with an inclined outer surface and the sealing ring has an appropriately shaped body portion for retention in the recess the neck and lip portions having the same form as that shown in Fig. 3. In a further embodiment Fig. 7 the free end of the socket is formed with a radial annular face 20 and an inclined annular face 18 and locking ring 4 has a radial face 23 and an inclined annular face 22 these faces together forming a recess in which body portion 13 of sealing ring 7 is retained. In another embodiment similar to that of Fig. 7 the free end of the socket has only a radial face and the locking ring has the configuration shown in Fig. 7, the body of the sealing ring having a different shape to conform to the altered shape of the recess.
