Abstract
1443626 Flying targets NORTHROP CORP 17 Sept 1974 [25 Feb 1974] 40447/74 Heading B7W [Also in Divisions F3 and H4] A flying target system comprises a remotely controlled drone aircraft 2 having suspended below the tip of each wing 4 a rocket propelled target 7 suspended by a slipper and socket device 10. Each target comprises a shell 20 formed with a nose section 11 profiled to accommodate a Luneberg lens 12 provided to enable the target to be tracked. Aft of section 11 a tube 15 houses a fast burning rocket motor 16 which is remotely fired to discharge through a nozzle 19. Annular radar-reflective panels 24 are positioned between tube 15 and shell 20, the resulting cavities being filled with a plastics foam filler in which are embedded further cruciform strip radar reflectors 26. A three element tail 21 is provided and the fins may be angled to cause the target to spin about its axis or this may be achieved by deflecting the efflux passing through nozzle 19. To ensure that tracking systems lock on to the fired target only one target has a radar non-reflective cover fitted over its lens 12 and this is removed by remotely controlled pyrotechnic means prior to the launch of the second target.
