Abstract
1322950 Missiles MESSERSCHMITTBOLKOW-BLOHM GmbH 7 Sept 1970 [9 Oct 1969] 42780/70 Heading F3A A jet propelled missile 1 is stabilized against yawing and pitching by a cable 2 which is attached to the tail end of the missile and exerts a restoring moment about the centre of gravity S of the missile when it deviates from its intended trajectory. The cable is wound on a reel 7 and is attached to a ground control 4 comprising a launching tube 5 and a locating device 6. Missile guiding signals generated at the control are transmitted to the missle along the cable 2. The missile is provided with its own acceleration and cruising motors, but its launch from the tube 5 is assisted by a supplementary propellant charge in the tube. The missile is arranged to be spun about its axis. The first part of the cable 2 to be withdrawn from the reel 7 is thicker and heavier than the remainder and has an increased resistance to withdrawal. The increased resistance is obtained by attaching the cable more firmly to the reel e.g. by adhesion or by providing a cable brake which is released via a retardation circuit when the first part of the cable has been withdrawn. The cruising motor is arranged to be initiated as soon as the first part of the cable has been withdrawn.
