Abstract
868,408. Tail assemblies for self-propelled missiles. HOTCHKISS-BRANDT. Feb. 29, 1960 [March 9, 1959], No. 6984/60. Classes 9(1) and 9(2). A fin-stabilized self-propelled missile is provided having fins arranged on transverse pivots and maintained in a collapsed state prior to launching, deployment of the fins being produced by the pressure of the propellent gases. According to the invention the fins A are mounted on a support 1 screwed into the rear of the rocket casing C and having an axial bore in which the Venturi nozzle T is slidable, the nozzle exterior being shaped to provide bearing surfaces for parts of the fins, such that before launching the fins maintain the nozzle in its forward position and after launching the nozzle is thrust rearwardly by the gases and forces the fins to rotate about their pivots 13. The support 1 is counterbored to house a seal 9 around the nozzle and heat-insulating material 10 shielding the support from the propellant D. Radially arranged slots 4 in the support receive the forward ends of the fins of which the pivots 13 are housed in blind bores 5, Fig. 6. Each fin A has a doubly-bevelled edge 14, which becomes the leading edge when the fins are deployed. A band B securing the fins in the collapsed position is forced off when the missile is placed in a launcher. Small vanes 12 inclined to the longitudinal axis of the missile may be placed in the nozzle to produce a rotary motion of the missile. The slots in the support may also be so arranged that, when deployed, the fins A give a spin to the missile.
