Abstract

1443517 Treating plants UNITED KING- DOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY 18 July 1973 [15 Aug 1972] 37985/72 Heading A1E In a plant-irrigation device for growing plants within an enclosure, water is vapourised by solar heat and condensed on the inside of the enclosure. Reflective surfaces are provided to modify the radiation. A film 5 of plastics material encloses at least part of the surface of soil 2 bounded by a moisture-proof barrier 3. Condensate collects in troughs 8 or on ledges 6 from which it is fed by ties 7 to the plants 1, 11. Rain may provide a source of water and the catchment area may be increased by an extension of the barrier as at 3b. The film 5 which may be used to modify the radiation spectrum reaching the plants may extend under the soil to the side 3b. A trough 9 of local water may be an additional source and some plants I may tolerate the local water while others 11 can be irrigated only by condensate. In a reservoir of acceptable water aeration may be effected by solar heat. The device may form part of a hydroponic system.
