Abstract
1443511 Sintered porous nickel plates SHERRITT GORDON MINES Ltd 24 Jan 1974 [22 Feb 1973] 03314/74 Heading C7D A porous sintered Ni plate is made by sintering in a reducing atmosphere e.g. hydrogen, a slurry in a volatile liquid of -270 mesh Tyler Ni powder containing 0.7- 1.4 wt. per cent NiO. The NiO content of the Ni is provided either by adding nickel hydroxide or Ni-graphite to the Ni powder and heating in an oxidizing atmosphere, or by adding an oxidizing agent such as NH 4 NO 3 to the slurry or by heating the Ni powder in an oxidizing atmosphere or by treating the Ni powder in a warm aerated salt solution such as ammonium sulphate, chloride, acetate, carbonate, nitrate, hydroxide or NaCl, NaNO 3 or KCl. The preferred liquid used for the slurry is water and an organic binder such as halogenated gelatins, alkaline or ammonium salts of carboxy methyl celluloses, hydroxy alkyl celluloses, hydroxy ethyl cellulose and hydroxy propyl cellulose. The slurry preferably contains 25-75 wt. per cent solids and the plates are formed in a graphite mould and sintered at 1500-1700‹F, The sintered plates may be impregnated with Ni, Zn or Cu hydroxides to form battery electrodes.
