Abstract
1447704 Water activated primary batteries DEFENCE SEC OF STATE FOR 2 Jan 1975 [9 Jan 1974 31 July 1974] 01082/74 and 33839/74 Heading H1B A cell of a water activated primary battery comprises a cathode 10, an anode 12 and a separator 13 formed by a porous membrane of paper or cloth, the anode being perforated to permit entry of electrolyte to the cathode during initial priming of the cell and to assist the escape of gas from the cell during its operation. The cathode material consists of a mixture of an organic oxyhalogen material such as 1,3-dibromo-5,5-dimethylhydantoin or trichlorotriazinetrione (bleach) with carbon black and a binder such as cellulose or viscose fibres. The cathode backing plate 11 is a zinc sheet painted on the cathode side with a conducting, carbon rich paint. The anode 12 is made of Al, Mg, Zn, or their alloys and is provided with dimples 14 which form a passageway for cooling water or electrolyte such as sea water. The battery may be initially primed with a solution of aluminium chloride and the cathode may alternatively comprise silver chloride.
