Abstract

1443386 Hardening colloid layers in photographic elements EASTMAN KODAK CO 7 May 1974 [7 May 1973 (3)] 20063/74 Heading G2C Hydrophilic colloid layers, e.g. of gelatine, in photographic elements are hardened by the addition of either (1) diacrylamide and 1,7-dichloro-3,3,5,5- tetraoxo-3,5-dithia heptane (i.e. bis (#-chloroethylsulphonyl)-methane) or (2) an acrylic hardener such as diacrylamide, N-methacryloyl-acrylamide or N,N'-diacryloylurea, or formaldehyde, and bis (vinylsulphonylmethyl) ether to the coating composition for the layer or by contacting a formed layer with a solution containing the said hardeners, the weight ratio of the two hardeners in each hardener mixture being from 5:1 to 1:5. The photographic element may be a black and white or colour material and may be a silver salt diffusion element and the layer may be a silver halide emulsion layer. The hardener combinations exhibit reduced afterhardening effects.
