Abstract

1443018 Discharge lamps GENERAL ELECTRIC CO 7 Dec 1973 [8 Dec 1972] 56882/73 Heading H1D [Also in Division H2] A lead 16 to a central end contact 18 on the base of a double-envelope arc lamp is surrounded by a sleeve 34 of refractory insulating material which retains its shape and does not become conductive at high temperatures. Suitable materials are quartz, quartz-like glass, and ceramics. Lime glass and hard borosilicate glass are not suitable. Preferably the lead 15 to the shell 17 of the base is surrounded by a similar sleeve 38. The base is secured to the lamp by screwing the shell 17 over a threaded retaining ring 19 which has inwardly turned notches 21 engaging corresponding dimples in the glass neck 12 of the lamp envelope. The sleeve 34 insulates the lead 16 from the ring 19. If an arc occurs inside the base between the leads 15 and 16 at the positions where they emerge from the press 14, the melting leads ball up within the sleeves 34 and 38, thus lengthening and constricting the arc until it is extinguished (Fig. 2, not shown). A further fuse arrangement 31, 32, 33 is provided as a protection against arcs between the leads 15 and 16 inside the outer envelope 3. In an alternative embodiment (Fig. 3, not shown) the sleeve 34 is shorter and is retained in position by a link in lead 16.
