Abstract

1442919 Phosphoric acid; purification MITSUBISHI CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 21 June 1974 [21 June 1973] 27785/74 Heading C1A Crude wet process phosphoric acid is purified of arsenic by treatment with hydrogen sulphide (which may be supplied as a gas or generated in situ) in the presence of activated carbon. This treatment may be preceded by other processes designed to remove other contaminants from the crude acid, e.g. the organic substance content may be reduced to less than 700 p.p.m. (calculated as carbon) either by calcining the phosphate rock from which the crude acid is obtained or by treating the crude acid with activated carbon; silicon and fluorine may be removed together as hydrogen fluoride and silicon tetrafluoride by heating or by steamstripping; sulphur trioxide may be precipitated as sulphates; and heavy metal contaminants may be removed in an organic extraction stage.
