Abstract

1396358 Removing mercury vapour from gas streams; purification of hydrogen SHOWA DENKO KK 12 Sept 1972 [16 Sept 1971 8 April 1972] 42269/72 Heading C1A Gases contaminated with mercury vapour are circulated and simultaneously washed with an acid solution containing divalent mercury ions at room temperature and atmospheric pressure, the concentration of said divalent mercury ions being from 0À05 to 0À5 g. per litre in order to diminish the mercury content of said gas to less than 0À01 mg./Nm.<SP>3</SP>. The contaminated gas may be by-product hydrogen evolved from electrolytic cells producing caustic soda, the exhaust gas from mercury mines or the indoor atmosphere of a plant manufacturing mercury thermometers. Sulphuric, hydrochloric or nitric acid may be present in the washing solution, sulphuric acid being preferred. The divalent mercury ions oxidize the mercury vapours to monovalent mercury ions which may be re-oxidized to divalent mercury ions for recycle by oxidizing agents such as permanganates, bichromates or chlorates or preferably, ammonium persulphate.
