Abstract

1401787 Gas purification process; potassium sulphate FRIEDRICH UHDE GmbH 21 Sept 1972 [23 Sept 1971] 43778/72 Heading C1A Sulphur dioxide is removed from a gas mixture by scrubbing with a solution containing K, OH and Cl ions which originates from a diaphragm electrolysis cell, to produce a solution containing sulphite ions, oxidizing the sulphite to sulphate, adding KCl to the oxidized solution and recovering potassium sulphate. Oxidation may be carried out with a free oxygen containing gas at between 50‹ and 100‹ C. at a pressure between 3 and 24 atmospheres. The amount of KCl added to the oxidized solution may be such as to make the total KCl content 250-350 g./litre. The solution may be taken from a cell with metal anodes, e.g. Ti.
