Abstract
1,274,457. Sulphur; separating sulphur values from gas streams. RALPH M. PARSONS CO. 1 Aug., 1969 [23 Aug., 1968], No. 38668/69. Heading C1A. Sulphur is removed from a gas containing H 2 S by a process comprising the steps of contacting the gas with an alumina supported oxide of a metal containing 10 to 40% by weight of the metal oxide to form a sulphide of the metal, oxidizing the sulphide to regenerate it to the oxide and to separate the sulphur values from the metal, and cyclically repeating the steps of contacting and oxidizing. The preferred oxide is supported ferric oxide. The supported oxide may be in a fluidized or moving bed which is continuously recycled between a contacting and regenerating zone; The process of the invention may be used to purify the tails gases from a process in which a gas containing sulphur compounds is treated to produce sulphur, e.g. the Claus kiln reaction, any unreacted SO 2 being recycled. The tail gas may beat a temperature of 150‹ to 400‹ C. The process of the invention may also be used to separate sulphur values from gas streams obtained by subjecting carbonaceous materials to partial oxidation and the water gas shift reaction. Plant comprising conventional absorption/regeneration pairs of contacting towers, adapted to perform the process of the present invention insofar as they contain the specified alumina supported oxide are also claimed.
