Abstract

1442450 Selective printing XEROX CORP 24 May 1974 [25 May 1973] 23249/74 Heading B6F A tabulating device for linewise or columnwise positioning of a printing device 10 relative to a recording medium 12 includes a rotary member (cylinder 26) having stations 100 selectively maskable by shutters 102, each station 100 corresponding to a relative position of the device and medium, a signal emitter (lamp 106 and light guide 108) and a receiver 32 (phototransducer). Detection of an unmasked station 100 causes the relative position of the device 10 and medium 12 to be held. Fig. 1 shows an embodiment for linewise tabulation. Fig. 2 shows solenoids 104S and 104C which respectively set and clean tabulation stops by sliding shutters 102. The stations as shown are apertures but alternatively they may be reflective. A printer may be provided with two such devices one for linewise and the other for letter spacing directions of tabulation.
