Abstract
1442229 ZrCl 4 /HfCl 4 UGINE ACIERS 14 Nov 1974 [14 Nov 1973] 49283/74 Heading C1A Zirconium and hafnium tetrachlorides are separated in a continuous process that involves selective absorption by a molten solvent which circulates in countercurrent to the halide vapours in a distillation column, the molten solvent being an alkali metal chloroaluminate (i.e. alkali chloride+AlCl 3 ) and/or alkali metal chloroformate (i.e. alkali chloride + FeCl 3 ) in which the mole ratio AlCl 3 and/or FeCl 3 to alkali metal chloride lies between 0À95 and 1À30, and where the selective absorption is carried out at a pressure of less than 5 bars and at a temperature of 250-550‹ C.
