Abstract

1442002 Cutting by laser beam WINKLER UND DUNNEBIER MASCHINENFABRIK UND EISENGIESSEREI KG 30 Aug 1974 [31 Aug 1973] 38018/74 Heading B4B [Also in Division G2] An apparatus for cutting paper, cardboard or the like material 1 to shape by burning, comprises a radiation source 3 for emitting a beam of coherent radiation, e.g. a laser beam, 4 and a hologram 2 which is subjected to incident or transmitted radiation and which directs the deflected radiation on to the material to be cut. The hologram consists of a radiationpermeable emulsion support, e.g. a piece of glass, coated with an exposed and developed photographic emulsion corresponding to the shape to be cut from a web 1 of paper; the web is fed continuously as the laser beam is actuated in pulses to cut successive portions from the web. In the modification shown in Fig. 3, the hologram 20 is located at an angle to the web 1 and the laser beam 11 is directed via mirrors 13, 18 and 19 on to the hologram which then directs the beam on to the web to effect the cutting. The hologram 20 is produced by locating in the same plane as that in which the web moves during cutting, a metal plate having a slot (17), Fig. 3 (not shown), therein corresponding to the image required on the hologram, an additional two mirrors (14, 15) being included in the arrangement shown in Fig. 3, in order to expose the emulsion on the hologram plate 20.
