Abstract

1345967 Photographic type-composing HARRIS-INTERTYPE CORP 4 May 1971 [4 May 1970] 13058/71 Heading B6W In a photographic type-composing machine, light from a high speed flash source 22 is directed on to a photosensitive surface 45, after passing through a selected character on a continuously rotating disc 10, one of a plurality of sizing lines 28, a collimating lens 35, a rotatable mirror 40 controlled by a servomotor 44 in accordance with the character width, and a refocusing lens 50. Prisms 25 are used for font selection. The lens 50 is constructed so as to compensate for variations in character image dimension or spacing caused when the refocussed beam deviates from the optical centre-line, the lens characteristic for this purpose being that the distance of the image on the image plane or photosensitive surface from the intersection of the lens axis and the image plane is proportional to the product of the distance from the lens to the image plane and the angle between the beam producing the image and the lens axis.
