Abstract

1406148 Copying by scanning INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORP 16 Oct 1973 [26 Dec 1972] 48103/73 Heading H4F Binary signals which control a modulator 21, Fig. 1, located between a laser 11 and a mirror drum 33 are fed to the modulator 21 under the control of synchronizing pulses generated by a photo-detector 59, Fig. 3, receiving part of the laser beam from the mirror drum 33 via a beam splitter 37, grating 51 and mirror 53. Modulator 21 causes deflection of the laser beam so that the part of the beam transmitted by beam splitter 37 is incident either on photosensitive recording surface 25 or on a knife edge 23 which acts as a shield; this deflection causes movement of the part of the laser beam reflected by beam splitter 37 parallel to the lines of grating 51.
