Abstract

1441336 Separator for floating impurities SOC GENERALE DE CONSTRUCTIONS ELECTRIQUES ET MECHANIQUES ALSTHOM 6 Nov 1973 [6 Nov 1972] 51499/73 Heading B2P An apparatus for removing a layer of polluting liquid; e.g. oil, floating on the surface of water comprises two spaced vertical walls 1, 2 which together form a convergent inlet for the water and polluting liquid, each of the walls having an inwardly projecting flange 3, 4 along its lower edge, these flanges serving to guide the water and polluting liquid along the convergent inlet towards a tangential inlet 5 of a part-conical cyclone chamber 6 disposed downstream of the convergent inlet, the chamber comprising at its upper portion an end wall having a central orifice 8 provided with a tube projecting above the end wall for the evacuation of the polluting liquid, and the lower portion of the side wall of the chamber being provided with a tangential outlet 7 for the evacuation of the centrifuged water. The wall 2 has a curved inner face 10 which forms the convergent inlet with the plane wall 1, and a plane outer face 11 which can be fixed laterally on the hull 9 of a boat by means of which the apparatus can be moved across the surface of an expanse of liquid-polluted water. Alterntively, the apparatus may be towed by a boat. The apparatus may also be used as a stationary unit in a natural or artificial liquidpolluted water current. Several convergent inlets and cyclone chambers can be grouped or used together to form a single separating apparatus, Specification 1379027 is referred to.
