Abstract
1441276 Electroslag welding and hardfacing; casting composite articles INST ELEKTROS IM ED PATONA AKAD NAUK UKRAIN SSR 27 June 1973 30606/73 Headings B3R and B3F In a method of electroslag welding or hardfacing, an elongate electrode 3 of constant crosssectional area is fixed in a well defined between melt-retaining walls 2 or 5, Figs. 1, 3 and the workpieces 1 or workpiece 4, leaving a cavity 10 between the base 9 of the electrode 3 and a baseplate 6, into which molten slag 12 is poured. The cross-section of the electrode and the well are such that the total air space 8 between the electrode metal and the well sides is equal to the amount by which the electrode metal expands when heated to its melting point by the electric current from source 11. If detachable, water-cooled, copper meltretaining walls 18 are used Fig. 9 a slag-skin 20 is formed between the deposit 16 and the walls and the decrease in the molten slag 12 is compensated for by providing a slag coating 21 on the electrode, the volume of the coating being equal to that of the skin to be formed. The coating may be a uniformly dense material in which case the air space 8 is equal to the expansion volume of the electrode as before. Alternatively, the coating may be porous Fig. 13a, be in the form of alternate dense and empty sections. 25, 26, Fig. 13b, or be in the form of a sheet of insulating porous material such as glass cloth, in which cases the coated electrode completely fills the well (Figs. 10-12, not shown) the air spaces defined by the pores or sections 26 being in total equal to the expansion volume of the electrode.
