1441268 Treating polymer surfaces IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 25 March 1974 [3 April 1973] 15834/73 Heading C3R [Also in Divisions B2 and D1] The adhesive properties of the surface of a polymer are improved by treatment with an aq. solution of a titanate ester of alkanolamine(s) and drying. The esterifying groups may be wholly alkanolamine(s) or may be part be C 1-8 alkyl or cycloalkyl, optionally OH-substituted, or C 1-8 alkenyl or mono- or poly-oxa-alkyl, or phenyl, optionally substituted by OH, amine, C# 4 -alkyl, or Cl. The ester may contain cyclic or low polyester structures. The treated surface may be after-treated with an aq. resorcinol/ formaldehyde polymer precursor, e.g. a substituted phenol / formaldehyde / resorcinol concentrate, and may also be aftertreated with a vinyl pyridine copolymer latex. They may also be treated with antistatic/antisoil agents, e.g. polyester spin-finishes, e.g. alkyl esters of fatty acids, sulphated fatty acid esters, fatty-alcohol/ ethylene oxide concentrates, mineral oil, phosphate esters, alcohol/ethylene oxide condensates, whiteners, e.g. based on stilbene or pyrene, or azo or anthraquinone dyes. The polymer may be polyethylene terephthalate, or nylon, or rayon, and may be a fibre or film, e.g. a cord for tyres or conveyer belting. The treated cord may be heated to 150-250‹ C. and contacted with a vulcanizable rubber, followed by shaping and vulcanizing the mixture. The rubber may be natural or S-curable cispolybutadiene, cispolyisoprene, butadiene copolymers with isobutene, styrene, acrylonitrile, or methyl methacrylate, or ethylene/propylene/diolefin terpolymers.
