Abstract

A method of backing a textile article comprises applying to the article a copolymer containing from 30 to 50% by weight of butadiene-1, 3, at least half of the remainder of the polymer being styrene and/or methyl methacrylate, any other constituent of the polymer being another monoethylenically unsaturated compound, in the form of a stable dispersion containing from 0.5 to 10% by weight of said butadiene-1, 3 copolymer of a copolymer of styrene and any of the alkyl monoesters (containing up to 8 carbon atoms in the alkyl group) or the mono amide of maleic acid, in solution on an inorganic or organic base and thereafter drying the article. Specified monoethylenically unsaturated monomers are acrylonitrile, methacrylonitrile, methacrylic acid and ethyl acrylate. Specified bases are triethanolamine, morpholine and aqueous ammonia, sodium hydroxide or potassium hydroxide. The preferred textile article is a woven or tufted carpet. The dispersions may also contain fillers, pigments, dispersion agents and thickening agents.
