1440184 Refractory structure IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 13 June 1973 [3 July 1972] 31043/72 Heading C1A [Also in Divisions B5 and F2] A refractory structure comprises a paper, cloth, sheet, board, blanket or felt of refractory metal oxide fibres bonded with a refractory binding agent wherein the refractory metal oxide fibres are formed by fibrizing a composition having a viscosity greater than 1 poise comprising an aqueous solution or sol of a metal compound which can form a refractory oxide and a minor proportion of a water-soluble organic polymer, drying the fibre formed and heating to decompose the metal compound to oxide and to decompose the polymer. The fibres are impregnated with a liquid composition, e.g. colloidal or dissolved inorganic oxy-compound, convertible to give a refractory bonding agent and can be formed into the desired shape before or after impregnation but before bonding by heating to 400-1500 C. It is preferred to use alumina or zirconia fibres made from an oxychloride, basic acetate, basic formate or nitrate of aluminium and/or zirconium and the preferred water-soluble organic polymers include polyethylene oxide, polyvinyl alcohol, and polyvinyl pyrrolidone. The compositions convertible to form a refractory bonding agent are preferably liquids containing compounds which can form a refractory oxide by heating, e.g. hydrated oxide sols of alumina, silica, titania, zirconia, oxychloride, basic acetates or basic formates of aluminium and/or zirconium; aluminosilicates; and alkali metal silicates, alkyl silicates, alkyl titanates. The refractory structure prepared may take many forms, e.g. sheets may be built up into thick wads by laminating, ridged or embossed sheets may be used in conjunction with plain sheets to provide an assembly with passages which can be formed into a spiral roll or tube. Uses include heat and electrical insulation, filtration, chemical treatment of gases and acoustic insulation.
