Abstract

1475193 Chromatography; filter elements; dispersing gases in liquids WHATMAN REEVE ANGEL Ltd 16 Jan 1976 [16 Oct 1974] 44894/74 Headings B1C, BID, BIH and BIT [Also in Divisions B5, Cl and D2] A uniformly porous element comprises a compressed mat of interlaced crushable fibres having a diameter of from 0.001 to 10 microns bonded together by an inorganic coating. Specified fibres include alumina, zirconia, aluminium silicate, and potassium polytitanate fibres. The inorganic coating may be an inorganic oxide, e.g. alumina, zirconia silica. The element may be in the form of a flat sheet or hollow cylinder, and may be impregnated with an organic or inorganic binder. The element may be used for filtration of fluids, diffusing a gas in a liquid e.g. aeration of sewage, and for chromatographic separation, e.g. an element formed from alumina fibres and an alumina binder impregnated with silica gel may be used as a chromatographic medium.
