Abstract

1439938 Treating waste materials OLARKE CHAPMAN Ltd 22 Oct 1973 [24 Oct 1972] 48944/72 Heading C1A The solid waste materials from a fossil fuel fired furnace are processed to form a material suitable for land filling, landscaping or road making by blending first, second and third components to provide a material of uniform consistency and optimized bulk density by mixing fly ash with water and then reducing the water content to form the first component, concentrating a moist scrubber reaction product derived from a unit in which flue gases from the furnace are scrubbed with water to form the second component and concentrating ash washed from the bottom of the furnace to form the third component. In a preferred embodiment, hot dry ashes deposited in the hoppers of the electrostatic precipitator 1 are fed to mixer 5 where the ashes are mixed with water to produce a slurry which is then filtered in a vacuum filter 6 to produce a mixture having a moisture content corresponding with the minimum packing volume. The slurry from gas scrubber 2 is thickened 7 and de-watered 9 to minimum volume. The furnace bottom ash is fed to a screen 10 and the solids are de-watered 11 to minimum volume. The three moist solid residues are passed to a blender 4 where they are mixed to uniform consistency. The water extracted in the preparation of residues may suitably be recycled for treating furnace gases and/or mixing with fly ash.
