Abstract
1439863 Valves D J SEYMOUR N MACRITCHIE P J MATTHEWS and T A CLARK 6 June 1973 [14 June 1972] 04822/76 Divided out of 1439862 Heading F2V A vent tube 30 for a ship's tank includes a valve member 32, normally held open by a latch 33/40 against the closing action of a spring 37, pressure-responsive means 43-54 automatically releasing the latch when subjected to the continued hydrostatic pressure exerted in the event of the ship sinking, release of pollutants from the tank of the sunken ship thereby being prevented. Should the ship sink, the hydrostatic pressure is applied via a strainer 56, restriction 51 and conduit 50 to a piston 46, thus moving the piston against spring 48 and pivoting latch member 40. The restriction 51 prevents momentary pressure, resulting from a wave breaking over the deck, from releasing the latch. A union 62, normally closed by a cover 63, can be used to salvage the tank contents of a sunken ship, a manually-operated lock 65 being actuated to prevent opening of the valve during operation of the salvage pump.
