Abstract
1439444 Joining glass surfaces by metal members RCA CORPORATION 1 May 1974 [10 May 1973] 19058/74 Heading C1M In joining two glass members 21, 22, such as the core and faceplate of a cathode-ray tube, having matching closed surfaces 23, 24 to be joined, a metal sealing member 20 of similar configuration is positioned between the surfaces 23, 24 in substantially continuous surface contact therewith, the member 20 being resistance heated to above the softening temperature of the glass for a time necessary to melt only the adjacent surfaces and then allowed to coil and the metal member 20 having a coefficient of thermal expansion which exceeds those of each glass member 21, 22 by from 0À5 to 10 x 10<SP>-7</SP>/‹ C. to place the glass members in compression. Soft glass is preferably used, having a range of C.T.E. of 85 to 150 Î 10<SP>-7</SP>/‹ C. The member 20 may be of Fe-Ni-Co-Mn alloy of C.T.E. about 98 Î 10<SP>-7</SP>/‹ C. or of Fe-Cr alloy. As shown, a flat metal member 20 is used, but in an alternative embodiment a wire of round section is used. Projections 27a, 27b may be provided, for connection to electrical energy, at opposed corners to give current paths of substantially the same length, or contacts may be applied against the exposed edge of the member. The sealing surfaces of the faceplate 21 and core 22 may be stepped and the metal member (round or flat) positioned in the outside step to assist in prevention of arcing since the metal is blanked off from the inside of the cathode-ray tube. To permit salvage of faceplate or core from a scrap assembly, the metal member is merely reheated.
