Abstract

1439014 Discharge treatment of gases G BRUNET A PRAMAGGIORE and R GUERIN 11 July 1973 [26 July 1972] 33103/73 Heading H1X [Also in Division H5] In an electric device for the treatment of a gaseous fluid comprising at least one treatment element to be disposed in the gaseous fluid to be treated, the treatment element comprising a first electrode 2 connected to a source 1 of unidirectional pulses of electric current, a solid dielectric material 5 so disposed about the first electrode 2 as to insulate electrically at least one face of the first electrode from the gaseous fluid to be treated, and a second gridlike electrode 3 disposed so as to cover at least partially the dielectric material on the side to be exposed to the gaseous fluid to be treated, the first electrode 2 comprises a continuous plate having a plurality of projections 2a uniformly distributed over the entire area of at least that face which faces towards tne second electrode 3. The element may comprise a plate 2 (Fig. 3) with stamped out portions 2a projecting on both sides of a median plane sandwiched between insulating layers 5 of thermoplastics material having a high dielectric constant and low dielectric loss, e.g. polyethylene or polystyrene, and stainless steel grids 3 and 4, with the projections 2a opposite holes 3a or 4a in the grids and providing pin-point zones 5a of smaller thickness than the remaining portions of the layers 5. Alternatively the zones 5a may have a higher dielectric constant than the remaining portions. The source 1 includes a half-wave rectifier diode 8, a switch 10 for varying the turns ratio of the transformer 6 and a variable resistor 11 for adjusting the output voltage. A resistor 9 prevents build-up of static electricity. In an alternative arrangement (Fig. 2, not shown) two banks of elements and two cylindrical alternative embodiments of the element are connected to the centre-tapped secondary winding of the transformer 6. The device may be used for the treatment of air containing pollutant molecules, e.g. SO 2 , H 2 S, NH 3 , CH 4 or other CH compounds to purify the air and increase the negative ion content.
