Abstract

1438954 Electro-photographic developers AGRA-GEVAERT 6 July 1973 [12 July 1972] 32655/72 Heading G2H A positive working electrostatic liquid developer comprises an electrically insulating carrier liquid having a dielectric constant of less than 3 and a volume resistivity in excess of 10<SP>9</SP> ohm. cm, resincoated toner particles suspended in said carrier liquid, an alkylated polymer of a heterocyclic N-vinyl monomer, and (at least if the toner consists of resin-coated carbon black) also comprises a metal soap of a fatty acid or a bivalent or trivalent metal salt of an organo-phosphorus oxyacid. The toner may be carbon black or a dye and is preferably coated with rosin or a resin derived from rosin such as a glycerine ester of a polymerized or hydrogenated wood rosin, or a pentaerythritol ester of wood rosin or hydrogenated wood rosin, or with a coumarone-indene resin or cyclized rubber. Other specified resins are rosin-modified phenol formaldehyde resins, esters of hydrogenated "long-oil", short oil and medium oil alkyd resins, polyvinyl esters, poly-acrylates and -methacrylates, and styrene-butadiene copolymers. The preferred alkylated polymers are olefin-alkylated poly-N- vinylpyrrolidone polymers, the olefin being an α-olefin with 2-2,000 or preferably 8-42 carbon atoms, but alkylated poly-N-vinylpiperidone polymers may also be used. The carrier liquid preferably comprises a mixture of aliphatic hydrocarbons.
