Abstract

[Also in Division C3] Surfaces are rendered more hydrophilic by applying thereto a uniform film of an aqueous solution containing a neutral amide of polyitaconic acid, polymonomethyl itaconic acid or a long chain film-forming itaconic acid polymer, or a copolymer thereof with acrylic acid, having a molecular weight of 15,000-200,000 and a viscosity between 100 and 4000 c.p.s. when in aqueous solution at 33% solids content. The method may be applied to an imaged planographic plate or to a surface intended for use as such a plate. The solution may additionally contain aluminium acid phosphate, monosodium phosphate, monopotassium phosphate, diammonium phosphate, cobalt phosphate, zinc phosphate, nickel phosphate, copper phosphate, cadmium phosphate and aluminium sulphate. The surface may be paper coated with zinc oxide, and a binder, e.g. styrene-butadiene copolymers, melamine resin, acrylic ester polymers, alkyd-styrene resins, vinyl acetatecrotonic acid copolymer, copolymerized vinyl acetate-crotonic acid and melamine crosslinking resins, melamine-alkyd resins, casein, and casein and styrene-butadiene mixtures. Other surfaces specified are aluminium, glass, calcium carbonate coated paper. A method of preparing an electrophotographic planographic plate in accordance with the invention comprises applying to a base, e.g. paper, an aqueous ammoniacal composition comprising a photoconductive pigment and a binder therefor which is a neutral amide of polyitaconic acid, polymonomethyl itaconic acid, or a long chain film-forming itaconic acid polymer, or copolymer with acrylic acid, having a molecular weight of 15,000-200,000 and a viscosity of 100-4000 c.p.s. when in aqueous solution at 33 % solids content; and drying the composition on the base. The photoconductive pigment may be zinc oxide. The plate so produced may be charged, imaged, developed and fixed by known electrophotographic techniques and then etched with prior art etching agents to render all non- image bearing areas hydrophilic.
