1438480 Preparation of alkyl 2,5-dihalo-3- nitrobenzoates and hydrolysis products thereof CHINOIN GYOGYSZER ES VEGYESZETI TERMEKEK GYARA RT 21 March 1975 [22 March 1974] 11987/75 Heading C2C A process for the preparation of an alkyl 2,5-dihalo-3-nitrobenzoate or a hydrolysis product thereof, comprises halogenating an alkyl 3-nitro-5-halosalicylate and, if desired, subjecting the alkyl 2,5-dihalo-3-nitrobenzoate thus obtained to hydrolysis. The nitration of the alkyl 5 halosalicylate to produce the starting material is carried out preferably with concentrated nitric acid in acetic acid medium. The halogenation can be performed using any appropriate halogenating agent preferably in an organic solvent, particularly in dimethyl formamide. The further hydrolysis may be effected preferably with an alkali metal hydroxide in an aqueous alkanol preferably in aqueous ethanol.
