Abstract

1437616 Controlling vehicle suspension height MONROE BELGIUM NV 17 May 1973 [12 June 1972] 48668/75 Divided out of 1437615 Heading B7D [Also in Division F2] A vehicle suspension levelling system ineludes at least one levelling unit 10, Fig. 1, comprising a valved damping piston 32 reciprocably mounted in a cylinder 12 and connected to a piston-rod 22, a free piston 42 or a deformable diaphragm separating an oil chamber 44 from a gas chamber 46, and a second free piston 74 or diaphragm separating the gas chamber from a second oil chamber 76 connected through a conduit 50 to external level control means which selectively supply oil to the chamber 76 in response to changes in attitude between the sprung and unsprung portions of the vehicle. In another embodiment, Fig. 2, the second free piston 92 and the second oil chamber 96 are located in a separate enclosure 84 having a gas chamber 94 which communicates with the gas chamber 46 through a conduit 90. The level control means comprises either a securing switch operated by relative movement between sprung and unsprung portions to energise a pump for supplying oil to or removing oil from the levelling unit, or a sensing valve which supplies oil to the unit from an hydraulic circuit provided on the vehicle for operating ancillary hydraulic servo devices or accessories. Flow or oil to and from the unit may be controlled by a restricted orifice. In a strut type suspension, Fig. 6, the piston-rod 22 of the unit 10 is connected to the vehicle body 214 and the cylinder 12 is received in a housing 21 carrying a stub axle 222.
