Abstract

1436980 Dynamo-electric machines BENDIX CORP 24 June 1974 [22 June 1973 (2)] 27964/74 Heading H2A [Also in Division C7) A rotor assembly comprises an annular permanent magnet 40 of sintered cobalt-rare earth alloy mounted on a hub 20, there being between the magnet and hub a layer 30 of a material whose melting point is higher than the sintering temperature of the cobalt-rare earth alloy. During manufacture the cobalt-rare earth powder is sintered in position around the hub and the layer 30 serves to prevent migration of ferromagnetic material from the hub into the cobalt-rare earth powder which could degrade the magnetic properties of the sintered magnet. Suitable rare earth elements are samarium and praseodymium. The layer 30 is deposited on hub 20 prior to sintering of the powder and may be deposited by flame spraying, by vacuum deposition of by sputtering. The layer 30 may be made or an oxide of zirconium, magnesium, beryllium, titanium or aluminium. The hub 20 may be formed integrally with a shaft 10 or the shaft itself may serve as the hub, Fig. 3, (not shown). The rotor shown forms part of a generator having stator poles 71, alternate ones of which carry windings 73.
