Abstract

1436696 Laminates BAKELITE XYLONITE Ltd 23 March 1973 [23 Dec 1971] 60061/71 Heading B5N [Also in Divisions B2 and G2] A sheet material having pre-selected retroreflective areas comprises a transparent or translucent layer of plastics material having one or more convex lens embossments on one surface, and if desired, further component layers of transparent or translucent plastics material bonded thereto, and a fibrous support layer bonded thereto, the sheet material having reflective areas together comprising at least 5% of the total area of the sheet, reflective areas comprising at least 5% of the total reflective area being in retro-reflective combination with one or more of the lens embodiments, at least a part of the reflective areas that are in retroreflective combination with one or more of the lenses being printed and/or coated on and/or forming an integral part or parts of the fibrous support layer. The fibrous support layer may be a woven or non-woven fabric of cotton, rayon, nylon, glass, metal, wool, carbon, polyester or polypropylene fibres, which may be printed with a metal-pigmented ink or comprise a proportion of reflective metal or metallized threads or filaments. The plastics layer, e.g. PVC, may be bonded to the substrate by thermal bonding, by means of an adhesive, e.g. a polyurethane, or by formation in situ, the embossing of the lenses being effected simultaneously with or subsequent to bonding of the plastics layer to the substrate.
