Abstract

A protective garment, for example a glove overshoes or a smock, comprises a textile substrate (10) which is overprinted with desired indicia, pattern or colour (11) and covered with an at least partially transparent coating (12) of impermeable plastics material to allow the overprinting to be visible therethrough. <IMAGE>

Description

PROTECTIVE GARMENT This invention concerns a protective garment, particularly, though by no means exclusively, a glove, and being a garment of the kind (hereinafter termed of the kind referred to) comprising a substrate of textile fabric having an outer coating of impermeable plastics material.
Protective garments, as used in many industries, are known comprising a substrate of textile fabric coated with a layer of plastics material such as a polyvinyl chloride, for example.
A common problem for industry is loss of such garments, particularly the smaller items - like gloves, through theft. For this reason, and as a deterrent (regardless of any advertising benefit) it has been common to overprint such garments with the name or logo of the owning company. Since these garments are used, as they are intended to be, in extreme conditions, whether mechanical, chemical, meteorological or otherwise, it is not surprising that such overprinting is of short life, thereby defeating its object in the long run.
One solution has been to mould the name or logo of the owning company into the plastics coating, but this is costly, requiring special moulds and so on.
Equally protective garments of the kind referred to are also, especially in the case of gloves, used in the domestic environment for gardening, cleaning, culinary and similar activities.
Generally the colour and therefore appearance of sucn protective garments has been determined by the colour of the plastics coating. Since various colours are required to indicate differenct qualities of product or to satisfy aesthetic whims as of the housewife - it has been necessary for the manufacturer to maintain a variety of different plastic resins and either a plurality of production lines or operate on a batch production basis with costly and time-consuming cleaning operations between successive batches of production.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a solution to these problems.
According to the present invention, there is provided a protective garment of the kind referred to wherein the textile substrate is overprinted and wherein the outer plastics coating is at least sufficiently transparent to leave the overprinting visible therethrough.
The overprinting may comprise desired indicia patterning or colour.
The textile material may be coloured with a single colour or may have a multi-coloured pattern, enabling for example washing-up gloves to be co-ordinated with tea-towels, curtains and so on.
It will be understood that the manufacturer need only stock one plastics resin and operate a single production line, different appearances of product being determined by different stocks of textile material from which they are formed.
The garment may be a glove.
The plastics coating may be an at least partially transparent polyvinyl chloride material.
The invention will be further apparent from the following description, with reference to the several figures of the accompanying drawing, which show, by way of example only, two forms of garment, being gloves, embodying same.
Of the drawing: Figure 1 shows a plan view of a first form of glove; Figure 2 shows a fragmentary cross-section of the glove on the line II-II of Figure I; Figure 3 shows a plan view of a second form of glove; and Figure 4 shows a fragmentary cross-section of the glove on the line IV-IV of figure 3.
Referring firstly to Figures 1 and 2, it will be seen that the glove, being a protective garment as might be used in the chemical or construction industry for example, comprises a substrate 10 of knitted cotton or other textile fibre.
The external surface of the substrate 10 is overprinted with suitable ink as at 11 with desired indicia - typically the name and/or logo of the company in which it is anticipated that the glove will be used.
The overprinted substrate is coated, as by dipping, with an outer covering 12 of transparent plastics, such as polyvinyl chloride, material. By transparent herein we mean at least sufficiently so that the indicia can be read therethrough.
It will be understood that any normal use of the glove will not destroy the indicia which will thus continue to act as a deterrent against theft (and incidentally an advertisement) throughout the life of the glove.
The glove of figures 3 and 4 is similar to that of Figures 1 and 2 save that the textile substrate 30 is overprinted with desired patterning 31 (including a single colour - which might be applied by dyeing) prior to application of the coating 32.
The invention may be applied to overshoes, smocks and all manner of other garments.
It will be appreciated that it is not intended to limit the invention to the above example only, many variations, such as might readily occur to one skilled in the art, being possible, without departing from the scope thereof as defined by the appended claims.
