Abstract

1436570 Two-part couplings BENDIX CORP 21 Dec 1973 [26 Dec 1972] 59510/73 Heading H2E A plug (right hand side) and socket (left hand side), connectable and disconnectable underwater, each comprise respectively an outer housing 100, 200 attached to a resilient fluid-filled cable conduit 300, 300, contacts 110, 210 circumferentially disposed within a tubular housing 123, 223, an inner cylindrical housing 121, 221, sealing means 170, 270 and resilient means 122, 222 against which the cylindrical housing 121 and the tubular housing 223 can move relative to the tubular housing 123 and cylindrical housing 221 respectively. On connecting the plug and socket, the socket housings 223 and 221 abut the plug housings 123 and 121 moving the housings 121 and 223 inwardly of the plug and socket and against the springs 122, 223 respectively, bringing the contacts 110, 210 together; a screw locking ring 106 is used to hold the plug and socket together. A key and keyway (not shown) serve to align the contacts. Fluid, preferably oil or a fluorocarbon, in the conduits also fills voids 120, 240 in the plug and socket, the resilience of the conduits ensuring that the pressure of the fluid equals that of the water surrounding the plug and socket; alternatively the fluid may fill only either the plug or socket.
