Abstract
1436424 Cooling dynamoelectric machines; terminal boxes and binding posts GENERAL ELECTRIC CO 28 Aug 1973 [1 Sept 1972] 40422/73 Headings H2A and H2E A terminal box for the high voltage terminal bushings of a multiphase dynamoelectric machine incorporates a flux shield near the parts of the walls of the box which are exposed leakage flux from the bushings, the shield being spaced from these wall parts to define flow passages for cooling fluid from the machine. In the open-top arrangement shown, three housings 4 for three pairs of phase bushings 17 extend away from a curved box wall 1, and a thin conductive flux shield 13 covers wall parts 12 exposed to leakage flux 19. The shield 13 has cut-outs 15 so that when the box is fitted to a machine (e.g. as in Specification 754,175) coolant gas may enter the passages between the shield 13 and wall parts 12, and then flow to a pair of suction manifolds 11, thereby to remove heat generated by flux-induced currents. The box is so shaped that the flow passages have least cross-sectional area and hence greatest fluid flow rate in the regions of greatest leakage flux, as in Fig. 2 (not shown), thereby to produce greatest cooling where needed. The bushings have internal passageways (not shown) for cooling fluid, discharge being via pipes 10 connected to suction manifolds 7. Liquid coolant is also envisaged.
