Abstract
1435855 Processing radio-active waste BAYER AG 28 Aug 1974 [28 Aug 1973] 37578/74 Heading G6R A radio-active waste solution is concentrated, for example by evaporation, and is then absorbed in granules of silica and/or alumina having a pore volume of at least 40 cm.<SP>3</SP>/100 g., followed by heating the granules to at least 400‹ C. to convert the salts in the waste solution to oxides which react with the material of the granules. The absorption and heating steps may be repeated one or more times, and the final heating temperature may be 1000‹ C. or higher, yielding a glasslike product. Heating may take place in a shaft furnace or a rotary kiln, or as a fluidized bed. In examples, spherical porous granules are used and consist of silica prepared by moulding bentonite and extracting with acid, silica obtained by a sol-gel process, and active alumina, which before use may be calcined to form alpha-alumina.
