Abstract

926,822. Processing and disposal of radioactive waste. CONTINENTAL OIL CO. Nov. 13, 1959 [Dec. 31, 1958], No. 36812/59. Drawings to Specification. Class 39 (4). Liquid radio-active waste is rendered more suitable for disposal by the addition of clay minerals in an amount of 1 to 60% by weight of the total mixture, lime in an amount of 2 to 30% by weight of the liquid waste, and basic metal hydroxide to give a pH of 10 to 13. Alternatively, the amount of lime added may be sufficient to give a Ca ion concentration of ¢ to 25% by weight of all components excepting the hydroxide. The treated waste may be pumped into subterranean spaces or injected into artificial fractures in impermeable rock formations, as described in Specification 926,821; the waste solidifies at normal or increased temperature. Suitable clay minerals are bentonite, calcium montmorillonite, and natural clays containing montmorillonite, kaolin, chlorite, and attapulgus clays. The basic metal hydroxide may be sodium, potassium, or calcium hydroxide in the form of a concentrated solution or as pellets. Portland cement may be added to hasten setting. To render the mixture more suitable for pumping, quebracho, tannins, or carboxymethyl hydroxyethyl cellulose may be added as thinners. Examples of liquid waste which may be treated are the aqueous layers resulting from the extraction with tributyl phosphate of solutions of spent fuel elements; these solutions are obtained by dissolving uraniumaluminium alloy elements in nitric acid, zirconium-uranium alloy elements in hydrofluoric acid, or stainless steel-uranium oxide elements in dilute aqua regia.
