Abstract

1434016 Vapour deposition of multi-phase alloys DEFENCE SECRETARY OF STATE FOR 6 July 1973 [14 July 1972] 33075/72 Heading C7F A multi-phase alloy layer of thickness 70.01" is made by vapour deposition under reduced pressure, the principal alloying constituent(s) being evaporated from at least one stationary source 14 on to a temperature controlled collector 13, and a minor alloying constituent being periodically deposited from a movable source 33 which traverses the collector. The principal and minor constituents have non-matching lattice structures, and the frequency and thickness of the minor layers are selected to suppress any tendency of the deposit to intercolumnar porosity. Source 14 may comprise evaporation and melting vessels 19, 20 heated by electron beams 22-28 and 25-29. Fresh principal constituents are added without breaking the vacuum in chamber 10 and may be added either as blanks from an evacuated column 38 using reciprocating ram 43 passing through vacuum seal 45, or from an ingot comprising many small blocks joined linearly by thin webs Fig. 3 (not shown). Source 33 may be an elongated heated trough 34 either reciprocated on line 36 or mounted on an oscillating rod. Collector 13 is water cooled at 15 and electrically heated at 16. Specified principal constituents are Al or Al/Cr/Fe and the minor constituent may be Fe, Ni or Mn.
