Abstract

1433914 Producing variegated yarns WOOL RESEARCH ORGANISATION OF NEW ZEALAND (Inc) 11 July 1973 [13 July 1972 7 Dec 1972] 33114/73 Headings D1F, DIN and D1W A variegated sliver is produced by feeding a carding machine sequentially with fibre (e.g. from a breaker or scribbler) of different colour or hue, or with different dyeing characteristics for subsequent dyeing of the yarn or finished article. A feeding mechanism for a carding engine is shown in Fig. 3, slivers 2a to 2f being selectively fed from cans, by aprons 6, under the control of an electronic system 11 which activates clutches 10 on a drive shaft 13. These clutches may be air controlled, electromechanical or electro-magnetic. A timer unit 12 which senses half cycles of a scratch feed carriage determines the feed intervals. A breaker or scribbler which produces batches of sliver for the carding engine may be run at twice the rate of the carder to build up a reserve of sliver. Combinations of the following are referred to for producing feed slivers:- wool, pre-chromed or other resist treated wool, mordant chromed wool, pre dyed wool, basic, deep dyed or acid dyeing nylon or acrylic fibres. Percentages of wool and acrylics are given.
