Tools; tool-holders. -A parting or like tool for use in lathes, planing-machines, &c. comprises a substantially quadrantal cutter of an area, but little greater than that of a quadrant of the bar being cut. The cutter a, Figs. 1 and 2, is relieved at b to a wedge shape, both in elevation and plan, to afford both lateral and end clearance. A dovetail rib d provides for clamping in a split holder at a variable top rake. The holder may be in two parts located by an abutment and a tenon p and clamped by screws r. The cutter may take the forms shown in Figs. 11 and 12, and may be secured in the holder by various forms of projections, recesses, pins, or screws. Fig. 8 shows a modification in which the holder is flush with one side of the tool. In a further modification, the tool is formed with a single locating-dovetail, and is secured by a clamp or by brazing, soldering, or welding. Such tools may be formed to cut at the end only, or at one or both sides, or obliquely, and may then be used as ordinary turn. ing or planing tools.
