Abstract

1433812 Grafted cellulosic fibres COMMISSARIAT A L'ENERGIE ATOMIQUE 7 June 1973 [16 June 1972] 27266/73 Headings C3G and C3P [Also in Division C2] Cellulosic fibres are provided, e.g. by grafting, with a polyampholyte covalently fixed thereto and having an excess of carboxylic acid groups with respect to amine groups so as to form salt linkages which confer properties of crease resistance in the dry state and recovery from creasing in the wet state and so as to have free COOH groups which are capable of initiating the formation of a permanent pleat by virtue of condensation of said COOH groups with OH groups of the fibres or with NH 2 groups of the polyampholyte. The polyampholyte may be constituted by a copolymer of an unsaturated acid and an unsaturated base; by polyacrylonitrile which has been hydrolysed and then subjected to a Hofman degradation; by polyacrylamide which has been subjected to a Hofman degradation; by a polymer of an unsaturated amine acid, or by an acid polymer and an amine polymer successively grafted on to the fibres. Examples are given in which cotton fibres are (a) grafted with acrylic acid and allylamine; (b) grafted with allylammonium acrylate, saponified and neutralized; (c) grafted with acrylonitrile, optionally with preliminary cyanethylation of the fibres, followed by alkaline hydrolysis and degradation with bromine water; (d) grafted with alpha-aminoisobutyric acid acrylate and (e) grafted with acrylic acid and then 2-vinylpyridine.
