Abstract
143,343. Chisholm, D. W. March 18, 1919. Welding.-In making lapwelded tubes, the scarfed edges of a pre-heated skelped strip are heated for welding by streams of oxygen or other gas directed through slits, holes, nozzles &c. in a container with a concave wall so arranged that the gas is directed at an angle upon and between the scarfed edges, whether the seam is presented in a perpendicular position or a position to the right or left thereof. The scarfed edges C are heated prior to passing through the welding-rolls A, A<1>, by oxygen or other gas directed through angular slits &c. c in an arcuate container supplied with gas by a pipe b. The container may be pivoted and raised and lowered as required, and may be so arranged that the gas is automatically turned on or off when the container is lowered or raised.
