Abstract
1432822 Corosion-inhibiting pigment AMERICAN METAL CLIMAX Inc 4 July 1973 [7 July 1972 31 May 1973] 31868/73 Addition to 1355627 Headings C1A and C1N [Also in Division C4] A method of making a corrosion-inhibiting pigment comprises (a) forming an aqueous dispersion of a particulate carrier, other than Zr, Ca, Sr or Ba carbonate, particulate molybdenum oxide and a particulate metal oxide which is one or more of Zn, Ca, Sr and Ba oxides, and maintaining the dispersion under conditions such that molybdate ions are formed by dissolution of the molybdenum oxide which react with metal ions formed by dissolution of the metal oxide to form an insoluble coating comprising metal molybdate on the particulate carrier, (b) separating the coated carrier and (c) drying the separated coated carrier. It is preferred to add a dispersion of metal oxide to an agitated dispersion of carrier and molybdenum oxide containing 40-50% by wt. of carrier of particle size 0À2-10 Á and carry out the reaction using a molar ratio of metal ions to molybdate ions of 1 : 1 to 5 : 1 at 60-90 C. giving a pH of 3-6. Preferred carriers are talc and TiO 2 but may also be BaSO 4 , CaSO 4 , quartz, diatomaceous earth, magnesium silicate, soapstone kaoline clay, mica and pumice and the coating amounts to 2-30% by wt. of the pigment produced. Drying is carried out at 100-150 C. followed optionally by calcining at 500-650 C.
