143,267. Davison, G. C., and Caulkins, C. P. May 14, 1919, [Convention date]. Void [Published under Sect. 91 of the Act]. Line-throwing apparatus.-Consists in making fixed ammunition for line-throwing guns with: (1) a projectile having a cylindrical body 1 and an extension 3 of reduced diameter terminating in an eye 4 for attachment to the line 5; and (2) a. cartridge having a front cover 7 secured to the base of the projectile, a tubular case integral with a base 8, and a primer 15 at the end of an axial rod 10 screwed to the base of the projectile and securing the front end of the cartridge case thereto by means of a flange 13. The base 8 of the cartridge is slit radially to open out and act as a gas check when the cartridge is fired and the case expelled with the projectile. The cartridge case is of drawn brass and is coated with shellac or white lead. The projectile is made of cheap cast metal such as malleable iron; the cylindrical part is turned true and lubricated; and the forward part is painted. In a modification, (1) the extension 3 is screwed to the body part 1 of the projectile, (2) the cartridge, case is secured to the axial rod by means of a nut screwed to the front end of this rod and situated between the cartridge and the projectile, (3) the front end of the cartridge case is made in one with the tubular body part, which is of subcalibre, and the rear end is an annular cap with flanges fitting the tubular body part and the axial rod, and (4) a small charge of black-powder is inserted in a recess in the axial rod to transmit the ignition from the primer to the propellent charge in the cartridge case.
