Abstract
139,856. Senior, G. Feb. 3, 1919. Pyrotechnic d e v i c e s . - Rockets are provided with lateral holes f adapted to discharge some of the propelling- gases in a tangential or in a partly tangential and partly rearwards direction, in order to impart rotation to the rocket to improve its flight and even to enable a guiding-stick to be dispensed with. When two propelling-charges d, d, Fig. 6, are used, the lateral holes may be disposed in an intermediate metal wad j. The lateral holes are also used to contain a priming for ignition by the usual fuse g, Fig. 1. These holes may be closed after a given time by a cap which is unsoldered' from the rocket tube by the heat of the gases escaping through the holes, and is pushed back by the air to cover the holes; this is intended especially for line-throwing rockets where increased propelling-power is required as the length of the line increases. The rocket may have a small hole l in axial alinement with the usual hole e in the propelling-charge to take in a rod from which to discharge the rocket.
